Neighborhood Electric Vehicles are also called NEVs. In most cases, an
NEV would qualify as a low speed vehicle, meaning it travels 30 miles per
hour or less, as defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration. The NEV complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standards. Additionally, the NEV is designed for use specifically in
residential communities that have low levels of traffic and lower speed
zones.
To get a better understanding as to how an NEV can benefit you, consider
the following statistics:
Of families living in the United States, 65% own a second car. However, more than 50% of the urban trips are only 10 miles or less. This means that 80% of all trips within a 10-mile radius reached using the traditional automobile results in engines running while cold, which means extra wear and tear on the engine and more pollutants in the air.
Owning an NEV is easy. The need to wait in gas lines is gone. Oil stains on your garage floor are gone. Tune-ups and oil changes every 3,000 miles are gone. Expensive tire replacement is gone.
NEVs are convenient and economical. After the initial purchase price, tags, insurance, and maintenance and operating costs, a traditional automobile is expensive. NEVs are reasonably priced, and for some of the models, there is no need for insurance or license tags.
Some options include Global Electric Motor Cars, also called GEM,
Bombardier, THINK Neighbor NEV, and Dynasty Motorcar Corp. The GEMs are
currently available and are unique options for transportation. GEMs are
much like the golf carts you see today. They can travel as far as 30
miles, and can reach speeds of 25 miles per hour. The cost to operate a
GEM is about .01 per mile. The cargo module can be changed to the back
where it can carry golf clubs or other types of cargo. This car is
electric and simply plugs into a 110-volt outlet. In addition, the GEM
has its own onboard charger, which can be charged in eight hours.
This particular option is considered a Multipurpose Neighborhood Electric
Vehicle that has 4-wheel hydraulic brakes, three-point anchored seatbelts,
and a safety glass windshield complete with wipers. This particular model
is as tall as a minivan and provides the driver with excellent visibility.
Standard features include brake lights, headlights, and turn signals. If
you like, you can purchase special enclosures to help protect you from the
sun, wind, rain, and so on. Finally, you can choose from a one- or
two-person model.
For the Bombardier, this electric vehicle is mass-produced. In fact, this
electric vehicle is said to be as easy to charge as a cellular phone.
This vehicle has a top speed of 25 miles per hour and can last 30 miles.
The battery is 6x12 V maintenance-free lead acid that takes eight hours to
charge. THINK Neighbor is a new offering that is a low-speed electric
vehicle. This is an excellent option for getting around your community or
college campus. Future versions will come in either two- or four-seat
models. This has a 5000-watt DC motor, 72 V energy sources, four to eight
hour charging time, regenerative braking, and aluminum space frame. For
added comfort, you will enjoy cup holders, flow-through ventilation,
adjustable driver's seat, heater, and even an AM/FM radio with option for
a CD, just to name a few of the fabulous features. The Dynasty is yet
another option that offers incredible features. You need to determine
what your specific needs are and then coordinate these needs with the
appropriate NEV.
