If you have been thinking about buying a scooter, you will quickly
discover a multitude of options to include gas versus electric. Both
types of scooters have good qualities. The decision will boil down to
finding the type of scooter that will best meet your specific needs. To
make your decision, consider some of the following information.
A gas scooter is more convenient than an electric scooter in that you can
simply pull into any gas station for a refill, unlike an electric scooter
where you have to actually plug the battery in to an electrical outlet and
allow it appropriate time for charging, generally from five to eight hours.
Additionally, a gas scooter is more powerful and can reach faster speeds
over the electric scooter. Gas scooters are also very lightweight and
often have a smaller frame, which makes them a great choice for beginning
riders. The gas scooter uses unleaded fuel mixed with either 2- or
4-stroke oil. Although there will be some variance depending on the model,
on average, the gas scooter gets 55 miles per gallon and can reach speeds
of 24 miles per hour. Most models are designed with front and rear disc
brakes, have a front and rear suspension, and have a 300-pound weight
capacity.
Electric scooters come in different watt power, again depending on the
model. The battery requires an 110V outlet for recharging and usually
takes from five to 8 hours to recharge. Most models are designed with
front and rear disc brakes and have a load capacity of 300 pounds.
Electric scooters are extremely beneficial when it comes to lowering or
eliminating pollution. As mentioned, one of the main concerns with the
electric scooter is that they do not provide as great a range as that of
the gas scooter. Another concern relates to the weight of the electric
scooter. Since the electric scooter is noticeably heavier, many people
do not feel comfortable handling this type of scooter.
Another concern documented from consumers is that there was a difference
relative to acceleration and hill climbing. The results showed the gas
scooter outperformed the electric scooter. However, it was also noted
that consumers felt if these two challenges could be improved upon, they
would be more likely to go with the electric scooter. With so many
organizations fighting to find ways to improve the air by reducing
pollution, the electric scooter has gained popularity. In fact, in Taiwan,
their EPA has mandated that a minimum of 2% of all scooters sold after
2000 have to be electric. Interestingly, the ratio of consumers that have
tried an electric scooter over a gas scooter is quite small.
Just as there are concerns with the electric scooter, there are advantages.
For one thing, a one-horsepower electric motor is equal to a
three-horsepower gasoline engine in relation to torque. The electric
scooter is also quieter and no warm-up time is required. An electrical
scooter is also highly cost effective, running on approximately .05 per
day to charge. Another consideration is that the electric scooter is
allowed on public transit, such as buses, trains, and planes, whereas the
gas-powered scooter is not, by law. On average, a gas scooter will weigh
around 22 pounds and the electric scooter 35 pounds.
What it boils down to is your specific preference and situation. For
example, if you live in a dormitory or apartment complex where you would
not want to leave your scooter outside, an electric scooter may be a
better option since the gas model will smell. However, if you plan to use
your scooter often, you may enjoy the ease of a gas scooter more than an
electric scooter. Simply weigh out the advantages and disadvantages, and
decide which type scooter will best accommodate your needs.
